The long interval which has elapsed since the publication of the Third Edhion of this book in July 1939 is, of course, due largely to circumstances arising directly out of the war. In addition, however, to this inevitable delay re-publication has been deliberately deferred because it was felt that it was desirable to wait until the work published during the war period (particularly in what were then enemy countries) could receive the fullest consideration. Actually, the war-time issues of many publications in which work on fluorescence analysis occurs, have become available in this country only very slowly.
It now appears that the above policy has been amply justified by the number and importance of the papers which have gradually come to light. Most of these papers have now been checked where possible and the results recorded fully in this new edition.

In addition to the inclusion of this and other new work, the opportunity has been taken to revise the whole text. Thus, a good deal of " dead wood " has been cut out, and large portions of the remainder of the book have been completely rewritten. In particular, attention may be drawn to an entirely new section dealing exclusively with the applications of fluorescence analysis to the evaluation of vitamin activity ; and also to the many new photographs of fluorescence phenomena. New lamps for the production of ultra-violet light, and new apparatus and technique used for fluorescence analysis (such as fluorescence chromatography), are also dealt with fully. As a measure [continued on back flap
of the still increasing importance of this subject it may be mentioned that the references to the original literature recorded in the book now number nearly
The authors and publishers are able, therefore, to offer what is virtually a new and enlarged work on the subject, although it still follows the same general plan as that used in the earlier editions. There is no evidence of any diminution in general interest in fluorescence analysis. Indeed, now that its possibilities are more fully appreciated and its limitations better understood, interest in most of its applications has grown considerably. It is hoped, therefore, that this standard work, in its latest form, will continue to play an important part in assisting the wide scientific public to whom fluorescence analysis is now a recognized instrument of testing and investigation.
