The hallucination is racial prejudice, and this book is as chilling and important now as it ever was. Mr Newman was a dull man, precise and normál, whose life was regulated to the last minute. But when he bought a new pair of spectacles, he looked different, perhaps alien. And certainly his neighbours and his employers began to behave differently towards him. For he looked like a Jew; and to look like a Jew in New York City in 1945, with the Christian Front on the rampage, puts a man on the spot.
