Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders are a cluster of syndromes which can share many clinical features, such as obsessive thoughts, preoccupations with body appearance (body dysmorphic disorder) or body weight (anorexia nervosa), and driven behaviours such as tics, hair-pulling and pathological gambling. They appear selectively responsive to serotonin reuptake inhibitors as well as to certain forms of cognitive-behavioural therapy. There is circumstantial evidence that such disturbances share a common neurobiological substrate. This book provides somé important clues to the aetiology, pathogenesis and treatment of the disorders of this spectrum. The primary focus is on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). A historical introduction is followed by an overview of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders and an analysis of their relationship to bodydysmorphic disorder and obsessive personality disorder. Several contributions examine the biological underpinnings of OCD symptoms,... Tovább

A historical introduction is followed by an overview of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders and an analysis of their relationship to bodydysmorphic disorder and obsessive personality disorder. Several contributions examine the biological underpinnings of OCD symptoms, including the prospects of neuroimaging for unravelling the brain regions implicated in the pathophysiology of the disorders. The role of neurotransmitters is alsó assessed, with special emphasis on pharmacological challenges that probe the various neuronal systems in the brain. Separate chapters are devoted to the potential of animal screens in developing new drugs for OCD, to behavioural and cognitive interventions, and to the management of treatment-resistant patients.
