FRA ANGELICO
LUCIANO BERTI
Fra Angelico was one of the greatest of those Florentine painters of the early fifteenth century who were affected by the new realism of Masaccio. A member of the Dominican order from an early age, he always directed his art towards devotional ends. This sense of religious dedication, coupled with his somewhat conservative training, caused him to avoid technical experiment for its own sake. Indeed he harks back to Giotto in the simple eloquence with which he depicts the Christian story, notably in the frescoes in the convent of San Marco. And yet he absorbed, perhaps better than any of his contemporaries, the influences of both Masaccio and the architect Brunelleschi. In the frescoes in the Vatican on the lives of St Stephen and St Lawrence, the solidly lifelike figures are grouped in a setting planned with a new feeling for architectural perspective - the whole-composition being suffused with the intense yet delicate colour which is one of the splendours of Fra Angelico's art.
