And yet he lived in poverty, and in his last years depended on charity for his wife and himself. Hais painted chiefly portraits, group portraits, and genre pieces depicting such subjects as laughing children, musicians and old women. His outstanding works are his portraits -particularly his group portraits, in which he solved the difiicult problems of composing likenesses of a number of sitters (each of whom demanded equal prominence) into a satisfying formai structure. The informality of these works was to be a strong influence on Manet and the Impressionists, and Hals's vitality, humour and .skill in catching the fleëting facial expression or gesture were to be a major contribution to Dutch art, and to the art of portraiture in général.
