Nigeria has won a pre-eminent position in the study of black African culture. From early history down to the present day the peoples of Nigeria have continually created works of art of an immense vitality and diversity. Their thriving cultures have produced legends and poetry of great beauty, sculpture that has changed the direction of Western art, and jewelry and pottery that have been admired the world over.

The past is represented by ancient legends, more recent times by carvings, paintings and jewelry, and the present day by the prose and poetry of contemporary Nigerian writers. Photographs and reproductions give a documentary record of the land and people.

This anthology presents in accessible form a picture of the country and its arts. Writings by Victorian travellers give the background by describing the country as it was when scarcely touched by Western methods and customs. The past is represented by ancient legends, more recent times by carvings, paintings and jewelry, and the present day by the prose and poetry of contemporary Nigerian writers. Photographs and reproductions give a documentary record of the land and people.
Among the writers included are the explorer, Sir Richard Burton, and the influential Victorian travel writer, Mary Kingsley. Several modern Nigerian writers are represented, including Wole Soyinka, Achebe and Pereira, and it can be seen from the power and lyricism of their work why it is that modern Nigerian writing has been acclaimed in the West as well as at home.
