SEA BEARS
The Story of the Fur Seal
by
Fredericka Martin
No greater lure for the avaricious fortune hunter has existed in history than the search for the fabulous fur seal. As far back as the 18th century, hardy Siberian hunters braved unpathed Pacific waters to take the glossy pelts to the Courts of Imperial Russia. Unscrupulous seal hunters these, pillaging and ravaging the quiet Aleutian villages to satisfy their greed for fur. Rapidly the fur seal was facing extinction. With the Alaska Purchase, the United States created monopoly stock companies in an effort to eliminate unbridled competition and curb the slaughter. Treaties were signed between Britain, Russia, Japan, and the United States, designed to regulate the kill and preserve the fur seal for posterity. Pelagic sealing was outlawed. At last the fur seal found in Henry Wood Elliott a persevering champion who waged a long, bitter Congressional fight in its behalf.
It is this epic of the Sea Bears that Fredericka Martin unfolds with historical accuracy, yet with the inborn ability of a good story teller. In it she shows that fur seals are almost human; shows us their migratory characteristics, sex life, herds, and harems; and develops for us the whole astonishing instinctive pattern of their daily lives.
