The charms of the French landscape, the holiday mood of Paris boulevards, cafés, and parks, and above all, the poetry of light—these are the subjects immortalized by the Impressionists in one of the most exciting art movements of the nineteenth century. Yet, when Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and their associates first exhibited in 1874, their novel subjects and technique were greeted with jeers, and the name Impressionist was applied in ridicule. Now, the name has become honorable, just as their brilliant canvases have become perhaps the most widely loved in history.
More than fifty pages of reproductions, with thirty in full color, provide a comprehensive view of the Impressionists, represented in examples by Manet, Renoir, Pissarro, Monet, Sisley, Degas, Seurat, Gauguin, Lautrec, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Morisot, and Cassatt.
