Hans Kiing is one of the most exciting and
provocative theologians of modern times.
In recent years, Kiing has offered modern
Catholicism a range of questions and
choices that excite many people, and pro-
foundly worry others. His On Being a Chris-
tian is a major statement of contemporary
liberal Catholic thought.
In Freud and the Problem of God, Kiing asks
what was at the root of Freud's atheism,
traces Freud's views of religion and the
nature of religious longings, and demon-
strates that the arguments that Freud of-
fered against the existence of God are
theologically unconvincing. Because Kiing
understands that religion was an important
issue for Freud, his discussion ranges
widely over psychoanalytic thought. Kiing
also presents for comparison the attitudes
toward religion of two of Freud's most im-
portant contemporaries, Jung and Adler.
