CANTERBURY is a good province to live and work in, to visit and rest in. It is richly-varied country; a perfect balance of plains and uplands nestling beneath the magnificent Southern Alps. Brent Trolle is one of the most gifted artists of the younger generation of New Zealand's painters. Brought up in Canterbury, he is sensitive to the special qualities of the landscape in its elemental form, and has an appreciative eye for the human influences which, in the main, have worked with the natural environment rather than against it. The nine paintings and thirty-six charcoal drawings in this book exemplify his finest work.
The pictures are complemented by an informal and occasionally controversial essay on the province and its people by G. C. A. Wall, a dedicated Canterbury-watcher for more than seventy years.
