Potential Carcinogenic Hazards from Drugs
The potential carcinogenic effects which may result from the use of certain drugs were discussed at a UICC Symposium held in Paris from 3 to 6 November 1965 under the Chairmanship of Professor René Truhaut.
These effects have been demonstrated by animal experiments and occasionally shown to occur in man. In evaluating the safe use of a drug, the balance of benefits and risks to the patient must be carefully considered. Available information on the potential carcinogenic effects of certain drugs is scattered throughout the literature and it appeared desirable to collect and submit it to the scrutiny of oncologists, pharmacologists and toxicologists. The Proceedings of the Symposium also contain papers on the methodology of testing and on the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the carcinogenic risks of the main categories of drugs, plastic substances used in surgery and radio-isotopes used for diagnostic purposes....
