In this remarkable interpretation of the foundation of Aikido technique, Gaku Homma focuses on the relationship between Japanese swordsmanship and open-hand movement, uniting historical tradition with the contemporary development of the art of Aikido. Although the study of Kenjutsu and Aikido have long been associated, this is the first book in which actual Aikido techniques are related to sequences used with the sword. Sixteen hundred frame-by-frame photos mirror the movement shared by both arts.
Praise for The Structure of Aikido: Kenjutsu and Taijutsu Sword and Open-Hand Movement Relationships:
Many have questioned whether the origin of Aikido movement can be found in the relationship between sword movement and open-hand Aikido technique. Gaku Homma meets this query head-on and shows clearly how the two forms are intrinsically related.

Many have questioned whether the origin of Aikido movement can be found in the relationship between sword movement and open-hand Aikido technique. Gaku Homma meets this query head-on and shows clearly how the two forms are intrinsically related.
—Shigeru Kawabe Kancho, Chairman of Aikikai Aikido North East Region: Aiki Shuren Dojo, Aikita, Japan
As a martial arts teacher, I am very impressed with the clarity and reach of this book. Gaku Homma Sensei illuminates each technique in three contexts, showing us its nuance and value in different fighting situations. Any martial artist, no matter what style he or she practices, will be captivated by the originality of his approach and the practicality of his teaching.
—Kancho Joko Ninomiya, Grand Master of Enshin Karate
Homma Sensei's powerful teachings are truly unique! His ability to instill discipline, self-confidence, balance and focus go well beyond the mat. I've taken his insights to many heights, including the cockpit of a Boeing 747!
—Doug Kelly, Pilot/ Instructor, United Airlines
Gaku Homma founded Nippon Kan Cultural Center, whose new 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Denver houses the largest traditional Aikido dojo in the Rocky Mountain region. It is the only Japanese culture center in the United States that also houses an extended live-in (uchideshi) student program, Japanese folk craft museum, and traditional Japanese country foods restaurant. He is the author of Aikido For Life, The Folk Art of Japanese Country Cooking, Children and the Martial Arts: An Aikido Point of View, and Aikido Sketch Diary: Dojo 365 Days. He trained under Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, as well as other high-ranking instructors.
