PREFACE: MACEDONIA - ETERNAL AND UNDENIABLE
The preface is an essay about Macedonia from the aspects of geography, ethnics, history and culture. It makes it possible for the reader, especially for foreign readers, to get a general idea about Macedonia and its people whose cultural heritage is represented in this monograph.
PREHISTORY
The introduction to this chapter is a synthesis of information about the prehistoric cultures on Macedonian soil and their periodisation as well as the archaeological sites and characteristics of objects. Then, there follows an illustrative part, with basic information on the objects presented. In view of the characteristics of archaeological remains, this monograph mainly presents portable objects.
ANTIQUITY
The introduction to this chapter describes the three basic periods of this epoch (pre-Roman, Roman and Early Christian), together with the specific historical, cultural and religious features of each period. It then deals with the peoples and their civilizations in this territory. Special emphasis is laid on the towns, castles and gravestones of these civilizations. In the illustrative part archaeological sites are presented through their most attractive objects (Stobi, Heraclea, Styberra, Scupi, Lychnidos). Special attention is paid to jewellery, ceramics, classical sculptures and Early Christian churches.
THE MIDDLE AGES
The introductory part of this voluminous chapter describes the epopee of the Macedonian Slavs as a source of their tradition. The overview of the roots of education and religion shows the courses of the overall mediaeval literary and artistic creations. Byzantine theology and aesthetics are the framework of an abundance of contents examined through such key techniques of artistic expression as church architecture, frescoes, icons, illuminated manuscripts and the plastic arts. The church monuments from the Turkish period are certainly significant works of creation in the cultural heritage as are the Islamic structures on Macedonian soil.
THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
The textual part of this chapter presents the historical and cultural factors, more precisely, all the factors that played a decisive role in the great changes that marked this century out and distinguished it from the previous one. It makes it possible for the reader to better grasp the artistic objects presented in the illustrative part (church buildings, monasteries, town dwelling-houses, frescoes, icons, iconostases ).
INSTEAD OF AN EPILOGUE: TRADITION AND CONTEMPORARY PERIOD
This chapter unites all the artistic objects presented in this monograph and emphasizes the general and specific elements of Macedonia that permeated all these periods and gave this culture a distinguishing character. It attempts to show the influence of past periods on the contemporary period and, more precisely, on the present culture. Vissza
