From Going My Own Way
In a way, I did understand why Dad's fans loved him so. When I saw Going My Way I was as moved as they were by the character he played. Father O'Malley handled that gang of young hooligans in his parish with such kindness and wisdom that I thought he was wonderful too. Instead of coming down hard on the kids and withdrawing his affection, he forgave them their misdeeds, took them to the ball game and picture show, taught them how to sing. By the last reel, the sheer persistence of his goodness had transformed even the worst of them into solid citizens. Then the lights came on and the movie was over. All the way back to the house I thought about the difference between the person up there on the screen and the one I knew at home
But the persona wasn't simply an act. That side of him was real too. Once he left the house and stepped into the world, he became another man, that same nice guy everyone loved in the movies.

Going My Own Way
Gary Crosby
Flashbulbs popped and reporters fired questions: three-week-old Gary Crosby was the subject of his first Paramount studio pubhcity blitz. He was cradled in the arms of his famous father, Bing, who looked the perfect family man with a pipe in one hand and his wife, Dixie Lee, by his side.
The myth of the 'Happy Crosby Clan', 'Ring's Boys' and the 'Crosby Scamps' had begun. They came to represent the ideal American household, incongruously yet credibly living in Hollywood without adopting Hollywood's values. But Bing's way was not always Gary's way, and reality often differed from the public image. There were parental squabbles, Dixie Lee drank too much, and Bing sometimes beat his recalcitrant son until the boy bled.
In this candid biography, Bing Crosby's eldest son tells of the conflicts between them - the alcoholism, the drug addiction, the rebellion - and of his eventual reconciliation with his father. The Bing Crosby who emerges is not the perfect father of Paramount's myth, but a much more poignant, and human, figure. Vissza
