ANDRÉ DERAIN
by Gaston Diehl author of Picasso in the same series
This timely study of the work of André Derain by an authority on modern art should clearly establish the statute of this late French painter. This timely study of the work of André Derain by an authority on modern art should clearly establish the statute of this late French painter. Along with several other young artists whose hot, bright, savage colours and search for absolute reality earned for them the nickname of Fauves, or "wild beasts", he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. Breaking away from the Fauves, he was one of the first artists to become fascinated in the non-naturalistic qualities of African masks and sculptures. An admirer of Cézanne, Derain was one of the initiators of Cubism. His later course differed from that of some of his contemporaries, such as Picasso, his companion on a summer trip to Spain. He produced a variety of scenic designs and illustrations, preferring, after the war, to make his home in the South of France and in Italy. Derain engaged tirelessly in a dramatic struggle to know himself and to develop his deepest aspirations, qualities which persisted even during the trials and tribulations of his later years.
This handsome volume includes 51 colour plates and 20 drawings, many of which have not been reproduced before.
