The discovery of the method of making glass dates back to antiquity, and was almost certainly an accident. As glass-makers learnt to dominate their materials, so even more intricate and exquisite forms, colours and types of decoration were achieved. Often the techniques were carefully guarded secrets, and it might take many years of patient experiment to discover the successful methods of a competitor. At different periods most of the countries of Europe took the lead in the production of glass, and, in more recenttimes, America has made a significant contribution.
