Róbert Speaight, who introduces this new Everyman edition, deals with this anecdote at somé length and throws an interesting light on George Eliot's use of the raw material of experience. Her descriptive powers have the warmth, detail and quiet persuasion that one associates with Dutch art: the scenes set in Mrs Poyser's farmhouse, the rectory, and the harvest supper have been styled ' Dutch interiors' and have been much praised.
