THE Furniture Doctor George Grotz, In true Yankee cracker-barrel style, George Grotz offers practical information to everybody about the care, repair, and refinishing of furniture-fine or otherwise. Here are detailed, clear steps to improving that chest of drawers you found in someone's attic, or a table discarded at the town dump, or that worthwhile antique you've been planning to refinish. For easy reference The Furniture Doctor is organized in encyclopedic form, divided into major divisions such as stains, finishes, or furniture periods. Under these headings are specific entries in alphabetical order. Each chapter is interspersed with anecdotes and Mr. Grotz's personal experiences in the business. He will tell you how to find articles of furniture in likely and unlikely places; how to recognize the style, wood, and worth; and how to refinish it to make a presentable piece to have in your house. In a light-hearted manner - but with knowledge of what he speaks--Mr. Grotz offers short cuts and professional secrets, some so amazingly easy it is hard to believe that the amateur craftsman is not vet aware (continued on back Rap)
(continued from front Hap) of them. This is a practical book which offers information with drawings on just about every facet of refinishing any kind of furniture. Besides being an authority on furniture refinishing, George Grotz is something of a New England character. After attending a school of journalism which will remain nameless, he assaulted Madison Avenue. The encounter ended in deadlock-too many geniuses. On a subsequent visit to an infamous Uncle George, who in his own lackadaisical way was running a refinishing shop in Vermont, Mr. Grotz was convinced that if he didn't know what to do, Vermont was the place to do it. Thus he joined other generations of his family who have set up housekeeping in abandoned old places in Vermont, laughingly referred to as old family homesteads. He and his family now live in a converted twelve-room tannery on the edge of a gorge. If you fall out the second story window, it's eighty feet to the water. Ever since his book From Gunk to Glow was published, he has been busy answering the thousands of letters he has received, trying hard to maintain the status of authority...which he seems to be doing quite well.
