At the age of two Gerald Durrell decided that ali he wanted to do in life was study animais. He filled his home with them but, as his ambitions swelled, so the hostilityof his family bec ame more implacable. The only solution was to work in a zoo, and so o ne winter's day he found his way to Whipsnade. Albert the lion, his first charge, though sulky and blustering by nature, should nevertheless have been pleasantly docile in the cold weather. Instead he behaved with a dreadful skittishness, hiding behind bushes and leaping out at unsuspecting old ladies. But Albert was not young Durrell's only prob lem. Babs, the polar bear, bowled him over with a well-placed clout on the bottom ; a zebra stallion kicked his bucketof mushrooms in a great sweeping parabola through the air ; the baby Pere David deer sent jets ofgoat's milk hissing into his eyes ; the bull buffalo covered his coat with clouds of white and frothy spittle.
