Eric Bentley says:
"Very much in modern literature and thought stems from—or is otherwise closely related to—German Romanticism. The theologians, in their rediscovery of Schleiermacher, have been recognizing this fact. But for most literary people it would seem that the relationship of Kafka to Kleist has yet to be encountered. Likewise, the debt of the Theatre of the Absurd to the theatre of Brentano, Tieck, Grabbe, and BLichner. Reading Walzel's survey one is reminded, in turn, of just about all the major moderns. How much of Pirandello, for example, is already in the Athenaeum Fragments! I don't mean to imply that this is the only kind of interest Walzel's book possesses. It is just that when a treatment of any period in any place is really good it bristles with connections with other periods and other places.
