The three plays in this volume share a common theme: the conflict between the individual and the social framework. In Chips With Everything, the R.A.F. provides the setting for Wesker's comment on the distorting pressures of the class system. The central figure, an upper-class recruit, is contemptuous both of established authority and of his weak-willed companions. Afore Night Come won Dávid Rudkin the Evening Standard Drama Award in 1962. This brooding study of the primitive forces latent in a rustic community culmlnates in the ritual murder of a helpless, pixilated Irishman. Everything in the Garden is a straightforward satire of civilized values, involving four young couples, the madame of a brothel, and a commercial artist.
