Vincent van Gogh
Artist of his Time Griselda Pollock and Fred Orton 68 illustrations, 31 in colour
Various myths surround the life and work of van Gogh. Griselda Pollock and Fred Orton have reconsidered the artist's ouvre and show that his intentions and achievements have not always been properly understood.
Son of a Dutch pastor, van Gogh began a number of careers - as art dealer, teacher and evangelist - before announcing his intention to become an artist in an important letter to his brother Theo. By their perceptive analysis the authors reveal an ambitious modernist, a highly educated, widely read and articulate painter, determined to be in the avant-garde and confronting the problem of the artist's role in an increasingly urban' industrial society. They avoid the traditional myths of the isolated and tortured genius and concentrate on the works themselves. These form the basis of a pictorial essay which shows how the same themes occur again and again in the work of this highly sophisticated and determined Northern artist.
Griselda Pollock and Fred Orton are art historians who teach at the University of Leeds.
