It was through his genius, moreover, that Romanticism (a movement that in England was chiefly literary, and in Germany mainly literary and musical) was given full expression in French art. From the time of Delacroix' first exhibition in 1822, the uninhibited drama of his themes, the boldness of his colour, his love for the exotic, and the extravagance of his decorative effects scandalized the critics, marking him as the champion of Romanticism and the opponent of the classical school led by Ingres. Only a few artists (among them Rubens, from whom he learned so much) have rivalled Delacroix in range of subject and vitality of execution. Episodes from ancient and mediaeval history; oriental scenes; stories from Shakespeare, Byron and Scott; religious subjects; policical allegory; portraits - all were fuel to his unflagging inspiration and energy. In matters of technique, the Impressionists were to profit greatly from his example. But the quality of his Romantic vision was so personal that he left no direct successor, and no painter since his death has created so comprehensive an imaginary world. Vissza
