This volume throws light on the period 1200-1500 when the Gothic spirit of passionate curiosity and rejoicing first wakened in France, England, Burgundy and the Netherlands, spreading to Italy, Germany and Spain. It includes reproductions of works by great "unknown" Masters such as the Maître de Moulins and the Master of St. Bartholomew, as well as Pol de Limbourg, Matthew Paris, Van der Goes, Memlinc, Charonton, Fouquet, Froment, Martini, Sassetta, Loren-zetti, Pedro Serra, Huguet, Lochner, Schon-gauer, Griinewald and Altdorfer.
