Although Goya never held an official position in government, his services to the court and his friends of influence aroused in him a sense of political responsibility in the face of a society at first in violent transition and then in complete dissolution. Most significant were the two great political events of his time, the French revolution and Napoleon's invasion of Spain. These had a shattering effect on both his life and art.
From May of 1808 until his death in Bordeaux twenty years later Goya suffered through the extremities of war and the persecution of his people. On one of the engravings for his celebrated series The Disasters of War, Goya inscribed the famous words, "I saw it with my own eyes." It is the heat of his total involvement that sears his canvasses, engravings and designs. Goya, the witness, holds an accusing mirror to the face of his time.
