From the prefabricated council house in Edinburgh where he was brought up to his elegant home just outside Genoa, it is a fascmatmg and absorbing story. Souness began his career as an apprentice with Spurs at the age of 15 but he was not happy there and twice tried to run back to Edinburgh. At 19, after just one appearance as a substitute for the first team, Spurs transferred him to Middlesbrough. There he came under the influence of the abrasive jack Charlton, the first of a succession of managers-Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Jock Stem - who were to help him mature into a formidable and dedicated player. Souness made his début for Scotland in 1974 but was not recalled to the side until the controversial Argentine World Cup. He captained Scotland dunng the 1982 competition and his appointment as skipper confirmed his arrival as one of Britain's few world-class players. Determined to play for a good First Division team, he had moved to Liverpool early in 1978, where he was to enjoy seven seasons of success. Through his commitment to winning every challenge, Souness has gained a reputation for being a hard player and one whom opponents treat with respect. In No Half Measures Souness is totally frank about this image, his lack of popularity on the terraces and in the press and he is equally forthright about his early, rather wayward attitűdé to contmued on back flap Vissza
