A PICTURE BOOK TO REMEMBER HER BY
64 Pages of Colour Photography BY COLOUR LIBRARY INTERNATIONAL
The sea has been a recurring theme in Greei< history and culture from the fabulous voyages of Odysseus to the battle of Navarino in 1827 which directly resulted in the creation of an independent Greece. The sea has a profound influence on the ¦daily life of modern Greeks; it is always very close-except for part of the central mainland no place in. Greece is much more than fifty kilometres from the sea - and its generous harvest is of great ¦ economic importance as much of the mountainous land is unsuitable for agriculture. The sea and the climate are partly responsible for attracting holiday-makers who also come to see the many reminders of the past. Greece has always been at the crossroads of history and the meeting place of East and West and evidence of her long and involved history is everywhere and ranges from ruins dating from 2000 B.C. to evidence of occupation in the fifteenth... Greece has always been at the crossroads of history and the meeting place of East and West and evidence of her long and involved history is everywhere and ranges from ruins dating from 2000 B.C. to evidence of occupation in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
One fifth of the total land area of Greece consists of islands which run from Corfu in the Ionian Sea, ooly a hundred kilometres or so from Italy, south through Crete to witbin rowing distance of the Turkish coast in the east. Nort:hwards the idyllic islands of the Cyclades. Sporades and the Dodecanese reach out across the "wine-dark sea" of Homer's Aegean.
The photographs in this book give a vivid impression of this beautiful country of ancient ruins, whitewashed buildings and many islands surrounded by a blue sea and bathed in sunshine. This is not only a picture book with which to recall memories of Greece but one which will also inform and perhaps tempt the reader to visit the country in person. Vissza
