Here are eighty richly evocative photographs of Greece, eiglit of them in colour, by JAN LUKAS, one of the vvorld's masters of the camera. They capture brilliantly the haunting essence of Greece and its tough, proud people. Lukas's response to his subject satisfies us in two ways: he takes account of'the glory that was Greece' that survives still in the many relics of classical art and architecture-and he relates this pasttothe ordinary people of today with an easy, unsentimental directness of approach. The camera's eye takes in the splendours of Delphi, of the Acropolis, doing them full justice, but it rightly is just as much interested in the face of living humanity: a barber in an Athens suburb, people transacting business beneath the Acropolis, a military parade, a vendor asleep at the markét, a gipsy family, an old woman of Delphi.
