In this revised edition of a book which has already been widely accepted as a standard introduction to the subject, he has taken a fresh look at his text in the light of the discoveries of the last eight years. Included are major additions on the significance of symbolism in Greek art, especially in the Archaic period, and on the role of the Classical nude; a number of changes in the illustrations, providing better views or photographs of new finds; and a considerable lengthening of the bibliography with the English-reading student in mind.

John Boardman was born in 1927, and educated at Chigwell School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He spent several years in Greece, three of them as Assistant Director of the British School of Archaeology, and excavated in Smyrna, Crete, Chios and Libya. For four years he was an Assistant Keeper In the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and is now Reader in Classical Archaeology and Fellow of Merton College in Oxford. Mr Boardman is also a Fellow of the British Academy. He has written widely on the art and archaeology of Archaic Greece - on excavations, on the date of the Knossos tablets, on Greek Burial Customs (with D. C. Kurtz), on Athenian Red Figure Vases, Athenian Black Figure Vases, and, in several books, on Greek gems.
