The making of mosaics dates back to the earliest days of antiquity. By the 4th century A.D. the fashion for mosaic pavements had become widespread in Mediterranean countries. But not until the rise of the Byzantine Empire was the craft elevated to a fine art, when mosaics, used to adorn the walls of churches and palaces, were of a magnificence unparalleled before or since.
It is in Greece, at that period a province of Byzantium, that the finest mosaics survive. Hellenistic traditions are very apparent in this Byzantine art. The large eyes, the delicate, fine features, the physical beauty and heroic bearing, all reveal a Greek source of inspiration, making these mosaics unique in their blending of medieval mysticism and classical simplicity.
