The Historical Gallery is a fine art
collection housed in the Hungarian
National Museum. As its name sug-
gests, the Gallery contains works of
historic interest and includes portraits
of important people and representa-
tions of significant events. In fact, the
paintings, drawings, engravings, litho-
graphs and photographs in the collec-
tion form a real treasure trove for
those who are interested in the past
of Hungary.
The pictures in the Historical Gal-
lery are by artists of various national-
ities. Before the nineteenth century
it was mainly Austrian, German,
Italian or Netherlandish masters who
did the painting. They either worked
on the spot in Hungary, or executed
their commissions abroad. Later, at
the beginning of the nineteenth cen-
tury, Hungarian artists also joined in
the work and from then on it were
primarily they who depicted outstand-
ing Hungarian individuals and historic
events.

the first serious attempt at offering a
comprehensive view of this collection,

Illustrated by 55 plates, the book
