This book is concerned with the use of arc-discharge valves such as thyratrons, ignitrons and excitrons for the control of electrical power. It describes the construction and operating characteristics of the different types available; their capabilities and limitations; the conditions they need for satisfactory service; and their behaviour in miscellaneous rectification and control circuits.
The physical processes involved inside the valves also are discussed; the aim here is to show the basis of the rating limitations specified by the manufacturers and also to give some guidance as to the behaviour to be expected in new applications not covered by the ratings. It is considered that some understanding of these processes is necessary for valves to be used to best advantage, whether in industrial control or in experimental research.
