'Ex?'
'S'il vous plait,' Pop said. 'Soft.' He held up three fingers. 'Three. Trois. Soft boiled.'
'Ex?'
'Yes, old boy,' Pop said. 'Oui.'
With his forefinger he described what he thought were a few helpful circles in the air and at this, he felt, the waiter seemed to understand. In a sort of ruminating daze he went away, muttering 'Ex' several times.
Two minutes later he came back to bring Pop a large treble brandy.
They're all here again - the indestructible Larkins of The Darling Buds of May (Penguin 1602). This time they've packed Baby Oscar and the rest of the family into the Rolls, and they're off to France. And what with Mr Charlton's intimate knowledge of the language, and Ma's unmarried passport, and the appearance of the seductive Angela Snow, H. E. Bates proves there is no French without tears of laughter. We can look forward to When the Green Woods Laugh, soon to be published in Penguins.
