More than mostvanished civilizations, the world of the Incas speaks directly to us today. They ordered their society firmly and justly. They built splendid roads in impossible country. They lacked the wheel and any form of writing, yet established a marvellous system of communication. They were brilliant agriculturists. They were the very model of a planned economy—yet they fell to pieces at the first hint of disunity and the first approach of a handful of intruders.

C. A. Burland provides a fascinating account of the Inca people and their rich cultural achievements over a period of six hundred years. This is set in perspective against the geographical and geological background of their land and the origins of the-American Indians in Siberia some 20,000 years ago.

Minoan Crete
H. E. L Mellersh
Though itwasone of the greatest and most distinct of ancient civilizations, practically nothing was known of Minoan Crete until the present century. It is, in a sense, the connplete creation of the archaeologist's spade and the scholar's imaginative detective work. Their detailed investigations have revealed a rich culture with such brilliance, luxury, oddity and gaiety that it has invited comparison with Paris at its peak, and this despite the fact that its few written records are little more than duty rosters and lists of quartermasters and tax-collectors.
Yet Crete, like all civilizations, seemed to possess its own inherent seeds of destruction. H. E, L. Mellersh weaves a fascinating story of the flowering of the Minoan civilization, a story not in isolation—forthe Minoanswere of the Bronze Age and a Mediterranean people.
A distinctive feature of the book are the superb illustrations—1 6 pages of plates in full color, and 76 black and white illustrations integrated with the text. Vissza
