It has been a country struggltng against, and almost completely devastated by Mongol and Turkish onslaughts, a country whose great thinkers raised the tormenting vision of a nation'sdeath. Hówever, Hungary survived, and gave such intellects to the world as Ferenc Liszt, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. The book begins with á historical survey that gives an account of the most significant events in Hungárián history, together with their European background. This is followed by the presentation of Budapest, the country's characteristic regions and villagés, old and new towns of the Danube Bend, Transdanubia, the Great Plainand, finally, Northern Hungary. The text is illustrated by photographs of the medieval churches, fortresses, monasteries that have only recently been saved from complete ruin by monument conservation, providing the reader with a fuller picture of Hungary .
