Hampshire is a county of contrasting and beautiful countryside. In the north are the green sweeping downs. Running through its centre are the lazy river valleys of the Itchen and the Test, which flow gently into the sea along the busy Hampshire coast. This book shows the county's coast and countryside in all its glorious variety and colour.

Hampshire is also a county to explore and enjoy. It has seldom been far from the pages of England's history. Reminders of famous events, and of historical and literary figures from its past, are everywhere. There are wonderful places to visit at all times of the year. King Alfred's ancient City of Winchester, the port of Southampton, and Portsmouth — the spiritual home of the Royal Navy — are the main centres.
But in the towns, villages and countryside are historic houses, castles, country parks and museums. In the river creeks and along the Solent coast are superb facilities for those who love sailing, windsurfing and messing about in boats. And for those who simply like to walk quietly through its green and pleasant scenery, the county has plenty of space.
This book gives a flavour of Hampshire and shows how much it has to offer.
Barry Shurlock was brought up on the Hampshire coast and has lived in or near Winchester for more than a decade.
He attended Price's School, Fareham, and then won a State Scholarship to study at Cambridge, where he read Natural Sciences. He was awarded a PhD for research and then went into publishing, working as a commissioning editor and later running his own company.
As a writer he is well known for his local history interests, which provide a 'second string' to his main career as a medical journalist. His books include Portrait of the Solent and The Winchester Story, as well as walker's guides to three long-distance paths — The Solent Way, The Test Way and the Clarendon Way.
