Hanif Kureishi's Intimacy, acclaimed by the Times as his 'best book so far', is a searingly honest study of the fears and desires that drive a man to leave his loved ones.
Its narrator is Jay, a writer marooned in the middle of his life, living a comfortable existence in London with Susan, his partner of six years, and their two young sons. Jay recounts his story on the evening that he is preparing to walk out on Susan and the boys for a younger woman. He knows his love for Susan has slowly decayed amid their shared domesticity.
As Jay weighs the harsh disparities between love and lust, and the masculine roles of lover, husband, and father, Intimacy offers a glimpse into the male psyche, Kureishi stripping away layers of posture and sel'f-justification to expose the weaknesses of his all-too-human protagonist.

This volume alsó includes three short stories by Kureishi that inspired the screenplay of Intimacy: 'Love in a Blue Time', 'Nightlight' and 'Strangers When We Meet'. There is alsó an introductory essay by Kureishi describing his collaboration with Patrice Chereau that brought Intimacy to the screen.
At the 2001 Berlin Film Festival, Intimacy was awarded the Golden Bear for Best Film, and its female lead Kerry Fox received the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
