Phosphorus (P) as an essential plant nutrient, is of vital importance to Indian agriculture. Soils of India, in general are poor in P and need P-fertilisers for producing high crop yields. Indian farmers are annually using 2 million tonnes of P^Og through a variety of fertilisers which may reach 3 million tonnes by 1990 and 5-6 by 2000 AD. On unit area basis, the use of P is rather small, being 11 kg PjOs/ha. The ultimate benefit which a farmer derives from the money spent on fertiliser-P depends on how skillfully he has used these fertilisers based on the results of research.

This report is an uptodate account of the many facets of P and the role which P-fertilisers can play in Indian agriculture. It consolidates, and analyses the scattered results of research available during the 1970-86 period into an easily-readable account for the everyday use of students, teachers, researchers, administrators, field staiF of the fertiliser industry, extension workers, soil and fertiliser testing laboratories, fertiliser trading and international organisations.
Based on a study of about 1200 documents, it contains 18 theme chapters, 64 data tables, and 32 illustrations. This report has been described as "The most comprehensive analysis of Phosphorus in Indian agriculture published thus far".
