THE OLD AU SABLE
by
HAZEN L. MILLER
Throughout history, rivers have exerted an almost magical influence on man. Tfiis is no wonder, for they have often provided many of his elemental needs, such as water for drinking and cleaning, food in the form of fish, natural protection against enemies, and a connecting link with the regions beyond that often could not be reached overland. Even today the largest and most thriving cities are usually found near great rivers, and many city dwellers are still inexorably drawn to their banks, either to swim, fish, sail, or simply to enjoy the magic scene of broad flowing waters.
Michigan, America's Water Wonderland, owes its fame not only to its many great and small lakes but also to its charming rivers. Dr. Hazen L.
Dr. Hazen L. Miller has done a real service to all who love regional history and folklore, and who love rivers, by giving a colorful account of the interesting people and events in the Au Sable region in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. He traces the region's history from the coming of the first white men, and the subsequent disappearance of the red men, through the lumbering days, up to the present; and he shows the effect the Au Sable River has had on these people and events, and vice
Part of his interesting account deals with the indiscriminate logging of Michigan's virgin pine in the Au Sable region. Here as elsewhere the logging industry gave birth to many towns; but when the last great pine had been ruthlessly felled, several of these towns died too.
This logging also greatly affected the river itself. Its banks were denuded of the towering pines and its waters used for transporting the logs. The thousands of logs disrupted the spawning grounds of the now

The Author
Hazen L. Miller graduated from the Medical School of the University of Michigan in 1920. Now retired from his medical practice, Miller pursues his interest in books, history, fly-fishing, art, old maps and unusual people. These interests moved him to try to tell the story of a fascinating bit of America. <
Dr. Miller has a retreat on the North Branch of the Au Sable which he calls Aswe Wood, a name derived from As You Like It. Over the door are Shakespeare's lines:
And this our life, exempt from public haunt, Finds tongues in trees, books in running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything: I would not change it.

legendary grayling, a fish that once inhabited the Au Sable River in almost unbelievable abundance. The beauty and taste of the grayling were unparalleled, as was its eagerness to fly at anything fishermen offered it.
It is only natural that in a setting such as this strong personalities should play a dominant role, and Dr. Miller presents several in vivid detail, including the Indian Chief David Shoppenagon.
The reader will be fascinated by the material this book contains, and will long remember it. It would not be surprising at all if he should decide to visit the beautiful Au Sable and its historic regions. Vissza
