THE BELLE EPOQUE
in the Paris Herald
Hebe Dorsey
Even in the 1890s they were calling it 'the
sauciest paper in Europe'. Officially titled the
European Edition of the New York Herald, it
was familiarly known simply as 'the Paris
Herald'. Launched by its irrepressible pub-
lisher, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., on 4 October
1887, it quickly became the indispensable daily
reading matter not only of American expatri-
ates and travellers but also of titled and wealthy
Europeans eager to be in the swim. Every day,
for example, 200 copies were sent to the Roma-
nov court in St. Petersburg.
In this book, culled from the files of the Paris
Herald from 1890 to 1914, the daily activities

and preoccupations of the Belle Epoque come to
vivid life. In addition to major news stories, the
Herald's reporters covered 'the scene' in Paris
and the other capitals of Europe - the latest
fashions and scandals, the new crazes such as
bicycling and automobilism, the art shows and
the auctions, the new plays, operas, ballets.
They managed to obtain exclusive interviews
with Sarah Bernhardt, Mark Twain, Paul
Poiret and many other notables of the time.
The Belle Epoque opens a window on a fasci-
nating moment in history when the old order
was beginning to yield to new ideas, new inven-
tions, and new social attitudes. The effect is of
leafing through the pages of the Paris Herald
itself. Original headlines and illustrations
appear exactly as in the paper alongside the
original texts. Advertisements, too, are taken
from the still-intact files in Paris, as are the
glorious colour illustrations that appeared in
special editions of the paper.
The book is compiled and introduced by Hebe
Dorsey, the witty and widely read fashion-and-
society editor of the International Herald
Tribune, which today continues the tradition of
the original paper founded in Paris nearly a
century ago. Vissza
