Helmut Jacoby, a well-known architectural draftsman, has
collected a broad, international selection of architectural
drawings that represent the most outstanding modern con-
tributions to the field. A number of brilliant architectural
draftsmen were active on both sides of the Atlantic from the
1890's to the middle of the twentieth century; vigorous and
extremely attractive drawings by Otto Wagner, Jules Guerin,

vard, where Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer shaped a new
generation of students (among them Paul Rudolph, I. M. Pei,
and John M. Johansen), intensive sketching and drawing
were part of the course of study. The demand for expert re-
presentations became so great that freelance specialists,
some of great talent, proliferated. Builders and construction
companies became accustomed to having architects pro-
vide them with high quality, easily comprehensible material.
In his selection of drawings for this book, Mr. Jacoby has
given consideration to examples that interpret architectural
designs in detail, clarifying the architect's concepts for the
layman as well as the specialist. "New Techniques of Ar-
chitectural Rendering" is thus an important source of infor-
mation for architects, architectural historians, and students
who wish to increase their range of expression in graphic de-
sign and improve his draftsmanship.
The Author: Helmut Jacoby was born in 1926 in Halle, Ger-
many, and studied at the technical universities of Berlin and
Stuttgart and the Graduate School of Design, Harvard Uni-
versity, where he received a degree in architecture in 1953.
In 1956, he opened his own studio for design and architec-
tural rendering, and he has designed for such architects as
Walter Gropius, Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Ludwig Mies van
der Rohe, and Eero Saarinen.
