PORTRAIT OFA DESERT The Namib stretches along the entire coastline of South West Africa and covers, all the semi-desert regions included, nearly a quarter of the country. In fact, there is far more semi-desert than there is desert. And even in its most desolate places the Namib is alive, having extraordinary fauna and flóra. In most of the books about South West Africa one can read about and see pictures of the rare Welwitschia plánt, the diamond diggings and the towering sanddunes, but all these things are so much part of the Namib that they cannot possibly be excluded. There are the mysterious petroglyphs and rock paintings which teli their tales about highly talented artists of the past, about people who once lived in and along the Namib and who have vanished. In this book I have tried to illustrate somé of the more intimate details of the Namib: to produce a portrait, to show the freckles on its face or, perhaps I should rather say, somé of the freckles so ivrites the author in...
