The Ambassadors The Ambassadors, though it was the author's own favourite among his riovels, is one of those (his last three) which have abruptly divided modern critics. In them Walter Allén finds 'the final splendid flowering of James's genius' and Graham Greene groups them together as his 'three poetic masterpieces'. On the other hand: 'We are asked to admire The Ambassadorswrites F.R. Leavis: 'and The Ambassadors seems to me not only not one of his great books, but to be a bad one.' Paris provides the brilliant, compelling focal point for this story of a yqung American whose weaithy mother dispatches from the States two successive embassies to bring him home; but the 'fine central intelligence' of the növel resides in the character of Strether, the first ambassador, who falls prey to the charms of Europe. . E.M. Forster, at any rate, detected a peculiar symmetry in the növel - 'the shape of an hourglass . . . Everything is planned, everything fits; none of the minor characters... TovábbFülszöveg
