Gianlorenzo Bernini was the greatest sculptor and one of the greatest architects of the seventeenth century. Today his work is everywhere in evidence in Romé-in the design of the colonnaded piazza before St Peter's, in a sequence of magnificent Baroque fountains, in lavish and fantastic decorative enterprises within St Peter's itself, and in a number of portrait busts and mythological and religious sculptures of unrivalled technical perfection and dramatic power.
