Julias Cromwell, blinded in die last war, brings his young wife Celia to their new home in an ancient house in the Glebeshire village of Garth in Roselands. Julius's blindness has opened to him a mysterious and enthralling inner world, but the farther he goes into it the more deeply he is removed from those he loves.
Circumstances combine to awaken in him a distrust of the world he cannot see, as well as of himself, and soon the blind man's house is pervaded with unhappiness, which, oil the winds of malicious gossip, is also diffused over the whole community of Garth. A crises brings both husband and wife to the realization of the need for interdependence, tolerance, understanding — the lesson that all mankind must learn.
A lifelike and entertaining group of subsidiary characters includes Katherine Mark of The green Minor and The Young Enchanted, some delightful children and a memorable dog.
