Human rights education is no easy task. This fact has been increasingly apparent in the five decades since the Charter of the United Nations called for cooperation "in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms." The United Nations recently proclaimed the Decade of Human Rights Education to raise awareness and understanding of both global and individual human rights issues. This charge to promote human rights education creates additional responsibilities for both worid govemments and nongovemmental organizations.
Human Rights Education for the Twenty-First Century is a comprehensive resource for training, education, and raising awareness in a wide variety of settings, both formal and nonformal. The contributors—experienced activists, education experts, and representatives of several international govemmental organizations—provide a rich potpouni of ideas and real-worid approaches to initiating, planning, and implementing programs for teaching people about their human rights and fundamental freedoms. This volume has been developed for a global audience of educators, scholars in many disciplines, nongovernmental organizations, and foundation officers.
In addition to providing thorough coverage of human rights theories and contexts, the ; book includes sections dedicated to teacher training and college and adult education; specialized human rights training for various professions (including law enforcement officers, military personnel, health care practitioners, scientists, and journalists); community-based education in nonformal settings; and resources and funding. Human Rights Education for the Twenty-First Century is the essential tool for every individual and organization charged with the promotion of human rights awareness and understanding.
George J. Andreopoulos is Assistant Professor of Government, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York; and Lecturer in International Human Rights, Yale University. Richard Pierre Claude is Professor Emeritus of Govemment and Politics University of Maryland. , ^ ^^
