Systematic research into dancing is perhaps the youngest branch of ethnography. The general public, even in Hinigary. knows little of Hinigarian t'olk dancing beyond the ( V./ i/w. , next to nothing of the many stylistic layers of the past, represented by stich dances as the Ancient Singing Maidens" Rotnids. Herdsmen's Dances preserving elements of the \\ capon Dance, Leaping and Lads" Dances and Couple Dances that have developed from those of the Renaissance. They were mostly replaced in the 18th and 19th centinies by the Recriiiting Dance and the ( ;;,/,/>, which have since turned into the
typical expressive modes of the Hinigarian national charactcr. György Martin tells the story of Hinigarian dancing through the centuries, describing their geographic articulation, the dance dialects to be found in various parts of the country.
