The latest information booklet on Forestry and Forest Management in Hungary was published in 1988. As a result of the comprehensive changes in the socio-economic system, this professional field, too, has altered considerably. The end of the earlier hegemony on Forestry practiced by the state, as well as dramatic changes in the structure of forest owner-ship, are the most characteristic features of the transformation. Co-operative ownership has returned to private hands, and as a result of the compensation process, considerable amounts of forest owned by the state have become private property. These facts, as regard management, have created a new situation for nearly half of the forested area of Hungary. At the same time, profound changes in the production and management of the state owned sector have occured.
