The papers that appear in this volume are devoted to three critical periods in the history of Hungary, periods when the political, economic and/or military pressure of a neighbouring great empire upon the country had decisive effects on its development. Hungary was first challenged by the advance of the Ottoman Empire into Europe, which brought upon the country an extended period of warfare. The Turkish occupation of central Hungary for the 150 years from the middle of the 16th to the end of the 17th century contributed to the survival of feudal social relations, and retarded economic and social change along modern lines. The liberation of Hungary from the Turks was carried out with the help of the Habsburg army, and the 18th and 19th centuries saw recurrent waves of conflict and compromise between the Habsburg Monarchy and Hungary, an organic, and yet separate part of it. The culmination of the conflicts was 1848, the bourgeois revolution and fight for independence; the compromise was made permanent in 1867, when the Habsburg Empire was transformed into the Austro-Hungárián Monarchy. The Compromise paved the way for Hungary's partial economic and social transformation. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungárián Monarchy and the collapse of historical Hungary, the newly förmed small state was soon faced with the danger coming from the emerging Germán Reich. The Third Reichand Hungary becameallies for a while for foreign policy reasons, but later, Nazi Germany pressed on to the occupation of the country. Leading historians from the USA, Western Europe and Hungary have contributed the papers in this volume examining Hungary in the context of world history in these decisive periods. Vissza
