The final section deals with local characteristics of Hungárián folk art, fitted into the framework of three big geographical units, viz. the Great Plain, Northern Hungary and Transdanubia. The 32 colour and 209 black-and-white photographs of the illustrative material reproduce all that is best in the creations of folk art assembled in Hungárián collections. In selecting the material, the authors have endeavoured to present a wide variety of the most outstanding objects illustrating the special ornamental techniques and styles of the various regions. Besides showing fine specimens of wood carving, furniture, pottery, embroidery and homespun, metál and glass objects, the book contains pictures of characteristic types of Hungárián peasant houses and a number of folk costumes.
HUNGÁRIÁN FOLK ART About 130 pages, 32 black-and-white illustrations and 16 colour plates, 14 X19 cm, cardboard Hungárián peasant árts and crafts-above all, music, costumes, embroidery and pottery -first attracted attention in the 19th century by their great diversity and colourfulness. However, today somé of these activities are being relegated to the background, and there is no denying the sad fact that the fascinating world of folklore is a vanishing one. We may hold off, if not prevent, its ultimate extinction while opportunity is still offered to reconstruct the 19th-century golden age of folklore and record all the beauty to which it gave birth. The aim of our HUNGÁRIÁN FOLK ART series, which is planned to comprise ten volumes, is to present these peasant arts and crafts in their full historical development over the years.
